Leadership Marks for Creating and Growing Vital Congregations
(The Episcopal Church is member of an ecumenical group who paid to create an assessment for redevelopers. The five areas are a paraphrase of this Gallup research)


Highly Self-Motivated:

  • They are self-motivated with drive to accomplish goals and agendas to make improvements in the culture of the congregations.
  • They have a high levels of intensity and self-initiative making “things happen”
  • This self-motivation as well as an innate need to excel opens them to be “risk taking” to influence the congregation toward vitality and growth
  • They strive on challenges which keeps them energized, engaged and fulfilled in the necessary congregational ministries
  • They are motivated by God’s call and ambitious for spreading His Kingdom.

Influencers: They have the ability to make things happen?

  • They do not lead by avoiding nor delaying but make things happen as they engage and “enroll” action in others.
  • They use their persuasive skills and not coercion to advance the vitality and growth agenda bringing change and choice to the members.
  • They confront difficult situations and tend to overcome ineffective congregational structures, “the sacred cows”.
  • Their self-confidence is manifest by their encouraging and empowering staff and members.


Self-management but not a “lone ranger” and Work Styles:

  • They are highly productive hard intense workers making effective use of the “gifts and graces” and talents of others.
  • They enjoy and thrive on works and create effective work groups.
  • They have clear goals and demonstrate persistence and track the efforts of others.
  • They continually seek input but have the “know how” to effectively organize the resources mixture of resources.
  • They own what needs to be done and do not pass it off. They own a problem and overcome the obstacles.
  • They know about wellness and get well by doing their work.

Relational and productive ways to connected with others:

  • They are connected to the congregational on a deep, psychological level by reading the congregation on a feeling level.
  • They navigate on a social level and expand social network, thus produces profound connection and cooperation.
  • They perceive the ministry as the most effective means of changing lives and the world.
  • They have a positive view of others and during hard times they still have a capacity to instill hope.
  • They will find a way inspiring and exciting others through healthy trusting relationships.

Problem Solvers: How to approach problems as an opportunity?

  • They are seen by others as capable and innovative and thus they are sought out for giftedness.
  • They know something can be fixed and will explore solutions by using innovation and through discernment just finding a way in the most challenging times.
  • They seek out situations where they have the greatest impact, thus not driven by the greatest need.
  • They want to get the problems out to be solved by demonstrating problem solving behaviors.
  • Problem solving produces challenges and rewards for them. They are frustrated by people and structures that are not sympathetic or understanding of innovative change.

There has never been a greater challenge for the Episcopal Church nor has there been a greater opportunity!! Over the past years some Episcopal Churches have increased in membership, annual income and Average Sunday Attendance. However, many congregations continue to plateau or decline in attendance and giving. 2010 is the time for leaders to gather, learn and be inspired to work toward greater congregational growth, renewal and vitality.

  • Leaders with Multi-faceted, multi-cultural capacity

  1. Highly motivated, passionate, spiritual renewal, motivated toward mission, strive for intensity
  2. Influencers, make things happen through others by empowerment, encourage. How change occurs with change and choice
  3. Work Style, highly productive, goal oriented, clear goals, use talents and abilities of others, working smart and enjoying it with proper boundaries
  4. Relational, deeply connected, reads the congregation, has healthy trusting relationships, creating cooperation
  5. Loves opportunity, talks about what is wrong and convinced it can be fixed. Problem solvers, creative explorer, dealing with conflict, overcomes obstacles by identifying a problem, discovers ways to deal with it.
