Use of Social Media

Why is Social Media is Important?
  1. Social media is now part of at least 69% of people's everyday life.
  2. The frequency of social media visits also is on the rise, with 42 percent of adults saying they visit these sites more now than they did six months ago.
  3. Nearly one in five of all adults (19 percent) say they visit blogs, communities or social networks daily, with a higher percentage of women saying so (22 percent vs. 16 percent). Percentages of daily visitors decrease as respondents get older:

Social Media by Generation

Nearly one in five of all adults (19 percent) say they visit blogs, communities or social networks daily, with a higher percentage of women saying so (22 percent vs. 16 percent). Percentages of daily visitors decrease as respondents get older:

  • 33 percent of Generation-Y respondents (people mostly in their 20s) visit these sites every day.
  • 17 percent of Generation X (mostly in their 30s and early 40s) visit these sites daily.
  • 11 percent of Baby Boomers (in their mid 40s to early 60s) visit social media sites daily.
  • 8 percent percent of Seniors visit daily
Given these statistics, the important news for the Episcopal Church is that 50% of people are under 40, use it in some form in their daily lives. This presents an opportunity for the church to reach out to a sizable minority that would be overlooked using only traditional media.
